The Meaning of Every Digit, from 0 to 9

数字的含义

Chinese number culture is built on homophones: a digit is auspicious when it sounds like a good word. These readings run deep — they shape property prices, wedding dates, licence plates and, of course, phone numbers.

The digits people pay for

  • 8 (bā) sounds like 发 fā — to prosper. The single most valuable digit; 88 and 888 multiply it.
  • 6 (liù) sounds like 溜/顺 — smooth, flowing. 66 means everything proceeds without obstruction.
  • 9 (jiǔ) sounds like 久 — long-lasting. Beloved for relationships and legacies.
  • 1 (yī) reads as 一路 — 'all the way'. Powerful as a prefix: 168, 一路发, one road to prosperity.
  • 3 (sān) sounds like 生 shēng — growth, life. Gentle upward energy.

The digits people avoid

4 (sì) sounds like 死 sǐ — death. Many buildings in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong skip the 4th floor entirely, and a phone number dense with 4s is genuinely harder to sell regardless of price. 7 is more neutral — in some readings it suggests togetherness (齐), in others departure — so context decides.

Combinations beat single digits

A number is read as phrases, not letters. 1688 reads 'one road, prosper, prosper'. 5288 reads 'I easily prosper, prosper'. 9413 would read painfully. This is why our scoring weighs the tail of the number most heavily — it is the phrase everyone remembers.
